My role at Bateman is…

Technical Sales Manager covering Northern England, Scotland and Wales.

It’s always been agriculture for me…

Application machinery and technology has been with me all my life. I’m the third generation of my family to sell spraying machinery, I come from an agrochemical distribution, contracting, and spraying machinery sales family business on one side, and a farming family on the other. As soon as I could drive (legally), I was out there spraying, particularly potatoes (as it fitted in well with school holidays).

My first job in agriculture was…

Working in the family agrochemical business. Originally set up by my grandfather, my father took over the reins and naturally I was expected to join. Then it was off to work for ICI for a year with their field trails division near Grantham.

From ICI I attended Cirencester College to complete my B.A.S.IS course, which back then in the early 80’s was only a 10-week course, I was now a fully-fledged agronomist. My plans changed when at just 21, I was then told to come back home and run the contracting side of the business.

Although we ran a small fleet of sprayers, by far my favourite was Bateman Agilator. We also ran 3 helicopters for aerial spraying, they coved potatoes at an average spot rate of 90 ac/hour, and cereals 110 ac/hour.

From those early days I learnt…

That farming is such a rich tapestry. I love dealing with farmers, they are such an eclectic bunch, but joined by a common bond in their love of the land.

Being with Bateman since 1999 has…

Been fascinating. A phone call out of the blue from Richard Bateman asking if I wanted a sales job is how I started my journey with Team Bateman. That was 1st March 1999, what a great journey.

Seeing Bateman machines evolve and witnessing the current momentum within the company regards to forthcoming innovation and technology, it always keeps a spring in your step, and a positive outlook for the future.

I would say farmers choose Bateman because…

They are dependable machines, built in-house entirely and built to last. The salesperson sells the first machine, but the parts and service back up sells the second and so on… our reputation is second to none.

For me Bateman means…

Being part of a British family business that the farming community respect and support.

My role at Bateman is…

Technical Sales Manager covering Southern England and Overseas.

It’s always been agriculture for me…

I attended an agricultural college in Essex and achieved a National Diploma followed by a Degree in Agriculture and Business Management. During this period, I also worked for various farming and contracting businesses to gain experience of all types of farming.

My first job in agriculture was…

A local dealership in Kent had recently become agents for a worldwide brand, I joined them as Product Demonstrator for this brand. After only two months of demonstrating tractors, combines, cultivators and more, an opportunity presented itself to move across into sales and I jumped at the chance. I helped to increase our share of the local market from 19 to 54 percent.

Fast forward five years, I then joined a dealership who wanted a presence in the Kent area. For 3 years I worked from home and out of the back of a pick-up truck, however, from a standing start I grew a 20 percent share of the local market. As our business expanded I was also instrumental in setting up a series of depots in the South East.

From those early days I learnt…

The value of good customer service. Anyone can take an order, however, looking after a customer from initial enquiry to delivery and being there to help minimise downtime should something go wrong is what builds lasting relationships.

Joining Bateman in March 2022 has…

Opened my eyes to a whole new experience. I am really enjoying the flexibility of selling directly, building a machine that is bespoke to the customer rather than off the shelf, rarely do any two machines share the same specifications.

Being able to share customer feedback with the Chief Designer who is also the head of the company is certainly unique in our industry, I believe it gives Bateman a real edge over the competition. We make decisions quickly because we’re all in the room, everyone is focussed on what we can do to make things even better for the customer.

I would say farmers choose Bateman because…

We are specialists in designing and building Self-Propelled Sprayers. This breeds confidence as farmers know we can build exactly what they need. The benefits of our knowledge enables us to provide machines that deliver a low cost of ownership and fantastic residual values. We’re second to none for parts and service.

For me Bateman means…

Being part of a great team designing, manufacturing and backing up such an iconic and important farming machine, all from a single site in the UK, doing our bit to support British farmers and farmers overseas to feed their respective nations.
